Dua Lipa Rules The World Pop Music Scene
She's young, she's beautiful, she's ambitious and you can instantly recognize the deepness and that sweet scratchiness in her rich voice, standing out bright among many other homogeneously sounding singers. Moreover, she's so talented - not only a singer but a songwriter and a model, too ... That is the English singer Dua Lipa!
It's highly unlikely you haven't heard about her by now. You probably stumble upon her hits "New Rules" and "IDGAF" on every radio station and on the TV all the time lately.
Dua Lipa's star have risen only recently but she struck gold very fast. The empowering female messages in her songs got so quickly into the hearts of girls and women from all over the world that probably this is the secret formula to her success along with the quality sound of her music.
Dua Lipa's Past
Dua Lipa's unconventional name is due to her Albanian origin. She was born on August 22nd, 1995, in a family of parents from Pristina who moved to Kosovo in mid 1990's and later from there to United Kingdom in 2008. Dua's given name means "love" in Albanian and although she was often mocked about it at school, later it served well as a stage name due to its atypical nature.
Dua's talent is probably inherited by her father who was a singer, too. Her abilities became apparent at early stage while she was still a child. Dua's parents signed her to part-time attend a theatre school while still in Kosovo and at the tender age of 14 she started making covers of her favorite songs by popular artists like Christina Aguilera, Nelly Furtado and Pink, and posting them to Youtube before moving to London in 2008 with dreams to become a singer. Although it happened so that shortly after moving Dua started modeling, finally she was discovered by and signed with Warner Music Group in 2015 and soon after she released her first single "New Love".
Early Career Collaborations and Singles
The real success came with Dua's second single "Be The One", released in October, 2015. Her first tour around Europe began in January, 2016 and ended in November the same year achieving huge success across the old continent. At the same time, in November, 2016, Sean Paul released his hit "No Lie" featuring Dua Lipa.
More successful collaborations followed and Dua and Martin Garrix gave life to another successful hit - "Scared to Be Lonely", in January, 2017.
Dua's self-titled debut album was released in June, 2017. Although she marketed just one album so far and it's been not even a year since its release, Dua already has multiple Platinum single achievements and her very first UK No.1 that became a massive hit - "New Rules", a tropical house and electropop song, in the lyrics of which the artist sets up a precautionary list of rules to get over an ex-boyfriend.
"One: Don't pick up the phone, you know he's only calling 'cause he's drunk and alone!
Two: Don't let him in, you'll have to kick him out again!
Three: Don't be his friend, you know you're going to wake up in his bed in the morning ...", the song says.
"They're not necessarily rules I've been able to stick by. But rules that I feel like it's important to be able to tell yourself, to tell your friends ... There's a reason people break up, and it's probably the same reason why you shouldn't get back together.", Dua confessed in an interview with NPR about it.
The song has been praised as every girl's anthem and was instantly loved not only by fans but by the general public as well. The single quickly hit No.1 in almost every European country's charts and entered the Top 10 lists of countries on other continents as well, such as US Billboard Hit 100, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. Many critics say that the song owes its success to the beautifully filmed video - Dua with a group of girls gathered in a fancy private villa doing things together and supporting each other upon a friend's breakup - but it's reaping its rewards anyway. The video reached 10 million views on Youtube in 4 days only and despite being published on the platform 8 months ago, it's still getting around 3 million views every single day.
The Big Success
"New Rules" itself helped Dua get the record-breaking 5 nominations at this year's BRIT Awards. She was up for British Video, British Single, British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough and British Album. Officially no woman has ever received this many nominations until now.
Dua possesses a very humble personality on top of her beauty and talent. She often states in her interviews for media that success doesn't necessarily mean chart positioning for her but doing things that she could be proud of and most importantly to have the opportunity to experiment, to be adventurous and to play around with expressing her personal experience and feelings with her songs. Dua confesses that in her opinion pop music is not about the genre anymore but "the artists are the face of the music they make" since two pop songs could sound nothing like each other because of the endless creative possibilities of the artists nowadays but that this is exactly what makes everything so magical and that you never know what is going to be "the next big thing".
After all "Hotter Than Hell" and "Blow Your Mind (Mwah)" singer won 2 of the 2018 BRIT Awards - for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough, few days ago during the official ceremony. What an amazing start of the year for the artist, right?
And seems to be getting even better ... "New Rules" scored another major milestone last week by hitting the staggering number of 1 billion views on Youtube - Dua's very first entry in the VIP Youtube view billionaires club! What a coincidence that it happened on February 14th, 2018, on St. Valentine's Day. And now with "IDGAF" climbing the charts fast and her second album coming up, it seems that there's more coming ... This will definitely be Dua Lipa's year!
